Kimya Dawson is an American singer song writer who is known for being half of the duo Moldy Peaches. She is also a solo performer and has collaborated on recordings with many well known artists. Her songs have been included in the soundtracks for a number of movies and she has released albums as a member of several musical groups. Dawson writes and performs in a variety of divergent musical styles making it difficult to categorize her music.
Between 1994 and 2004 Kimya Dawson was Adam Green's partner in the Moldy Peaches. The Moldy Peaches released three albums during that time titled 'The Moldy Peaches' (2001), County Fair/Rainbows' (2002) and 'Moldy Peaches 200:Unreleased Cutz and Live Jamz 1994-2002' (2003). Although the Moldy Peaches went their separate ways in 2004, they reunited in 2007-2008 for some appearances when their song 'Anyone Else But You' was featured on the soundtrack of hit film 'Juno'.
The Moldy Peaches billed themselves as an anti folk music group but Kimya Dawson has also written and performed in the punk and Indie genres. After the Moldy Peaches split up, she chose to pursue a solo career and has produced a number of lo-fi independent label albums. Following the birth of her child she created the album Alphabutt in 2008 which features songs for children including 'Seven Hungry Tigers', Wiggle My Tooth' and 'Little Monster Babies'.
Dawson's music has been featured in a number of movie soundtracks including the movies 'The Guatemalan Handshake' and 'Glue' from the 2007 Olympia Film Festival. Her song 'Anthrax' was used in the documentary film, 'Body of War'. In addition to Moldy Peaches song 'Anyone Else But You', the soundtrack for the film 'Juno' featured five of Dawson's solo songs, including two that were released on her album with Antsy Pants.
The soundtrack album for 'Juno' was released in the #8 position on the Billboard music charts and rose to #3 within a week. After three weeks the album made it to the #1 spot on the charts. The songs featured in 'Juno' helped to bring Kimya Dawson some notice, but she still has not had a solo hit. Two more of her solo songs were used in the soundtrack for the movie 'Unmade Beds'. She continues to record as a solo artist or as a collaborator with other artists.
Ben Kweller performed with Kimya Dawson on his albums 'They Might Giants', 'The Mountain Goats', 'John Wayne Shot Me' and 'Your Heart Breaks'. Lead singer Stephen Jenkins and Dawson perform a duet on Third Eye Blind's album, Ursa Major and she collaborated with Regina Spektor on the song “Fire” which appears on her 'Hidden Vagenda' album. A future collaboration with underground rapper MURS is being considered by Dawson.
Solo album titles by Dawson include 'I'm Sorry That Sometimes I'm Mean', 'Knock, Knock Who?', 'My Cute Fiend Sweet Princess', 'Hidden Vagenda', 'Remember That I Love You', and 'Alphabutt'. An additional album, 'Thunder Thighs' is due to be released in 2011. While praised by music critics and fellow musicians, Kimya Dawson has a small, but loyal, fan base. Like many musicians who work in a variety of styles, she has not captured the attention of a larger audience.
